20 Day Stranger

20:12

Nowadays, it's the most normal thing in the world to be talking to people living across the globe. Technology and social media make distances smaller than ever before.

The people at MIT made a beautiful app to experience the life of a stranger living on the other side of the world. For 20 days you will be linked to a stranger, whom you'll be sharing your life with. For example, if you go to a museum or are visiting the zoo, the app will find a picture someone else took there and send it to your stranger. Both your identities will remain secret during the whole experiment, but you will get an detailed impression of someone's life.
How does a normal day look for someone you don't know? Do you have things in common or are your lives totally different?

We share almost everything nowadays on social media. But to be honest, we know it's all made a little bit more picture perfect than it truly is. I think that the best thing of this app is that you'll share everyday details of normal things, which I think is fascinating. So suddenly: normal becomes special.

At the end of the 20 days, you can send each other one message. Will it be goodbye? Or will it be a beginning of a new friendship?

“If it works, if it succeeds, you’ve started to model the life of a stranger in your head and maybe in your heart, and if it really works, you start to realize that all the strangers around you all have complex and rich lives."
(Kevin Slavin, director of MIT Media Lab’s)
